Founded in 1959, The National School of Drama was established under the Sangeet Natak Akademi, which had Jawaharlal Nehru as its president. Under the direction (1962–77) of Ebrahim Alkazi, the school emerged as India’s premier theatre-training institute. The NSD story continued to unfold as it relocated in May 1975 to its present premises at Bahawalpur House, once the residence of Bahawalpur, a former princely state.
