What
Mavericks is engage4more’s most analytically demanding virtual team experience — a role-based detective activity in which teams are assigned to uncover a hard-boiling case, with every team member receiving a unique investigative role whose individual contribution directly determines the team's ability to solve the mystery. The activity tests teams not only on the speed of their case solution but on the precision of their analysis — the fastest team is not automatically the winner; the most accurate analysis earns the championship. This dual objective of speed and accuracy mirrors precisely the real organisational challenge of making good decisions quickly — and surfaces which teams prioritise thoroughness and which prioritise velocity, with instructive results for both.
Our virtual activities are designed using engage4more’s MORE² Framework, which diagnoses the specific engagement dimensions your distributed team needs to strengthen. For organisations aligning virtual engagement to strategic priorities, our SPARK Framework ensures every virtual experience connects to your organisational goals. For maximum impact, we recommend combining virtual activities with one of our expert Motivational Speakers for a complete virtual event programme.
Mavericks is built on the insight that the most effective virtual team-building experiences are those that require genuinely different capabilities from different team members — creating the mutual dependency that is the foundation of real team performance. The detective format achieves this structurally: the analyst who can synthesise clues, the communicator who can share intelligence efficiently, the lateral thinker who can see connections others miss, and the leader who can integrate multiple threads under time pressure all have roles in which their specific capability is genuinely decisive.

How
Participants join via video conferencing and are divided into investigating teams in breakout rooms. Each team member receives their unique investigative role card and their individual set of clues — some overlapping with teammates' clues, some unique, and some that only make sense in combination with a colleague's information. The facilitator releases progressive case developments as teams advance, and manages a live accuracy-and-speed leaderboard throughout. Teams submit their formal case solution — including suspect identification, motive, method, and evidence chain — at the end of the investigation window.

Why This Works for Your Team
-
Role-Based Structure Creates Genuine Mutual Dependency: Every role holds clues that are uniquely essential to the solution — structurally ensuring that no individual can solve the case alone, and that every team member's contribution is visibly necessary.
-
Accuracy AND Speed Rewards Both Analytical Profiles: Teams that are fast but imprecise score differently from teams that are thorough but methodical — the dual objective creates a richer and more honest team performance map than speed-only competitive formats.
-
Cross-Team Intelligence Exchange Adds Strategic Depth: The inter-team negotiation layer creates a diplomatic and strategic dimension that mirror the cross-functional intelligence-sharing dynamics of real organisational decision-making.
-
The Case Narrative Creates Sustained Emotional Investment: A well-constructed mystery creates the kind of "I need to know how this ends" engagement that keeps every participant fully focused from the case briefing to the final reveal.
-
The Debrief Connects Investigation Behaviour to Real Work Patterns: How teams managed their clue-sharing, who led the analysis, how they handled conflicting information — the investigation evidence base provides a rich and specific debrief foundation for real team development conversation.
