What

Play With Clay is engage4more’s most elemental creative team-building experience — a hands-on pottery and clay sculpting workshop where employees work collaboratively to produce clay masterpieces using one of the oldest artistic mediums known to human civilisation. There is something uniquely powerful about working with clay. It responds immediately to touch, forgives and allows reworking, rewards patience, and produces results that are tangibly three-dimensional — unlike any digital or paper-based creative activity. The moment an employee’s hands sink into fresh clay and they feel the material respond to their pressure, a fundamental shift in creative mindset occurs: they stop being a corporate professional and become a maker.

Our delivery is grounded in engage4more’s MORE² Framework, which diagnoses the precise engagement gaps your team needs to address. Where strategic alignment is the objective, we layer in our SPARK Framework to connect the activity to your organisational priorities. To maximise the day’s impact, we recommend anchoring the session with one of our expert Motivational Speakers whose keynote primes the team for the experience ahead.

Play With Clay is one of the most genuinely collaborative creative activities in engage4more’s portfolio because clay demands constant dialogue. Decisions about shape, proportion, and form must be negotiated in real time between team members building a shared piece. Who shapes the base? Who details the surface? Who has the patience to thin the walls without cracking them? These micro-negotiations surface the same communication patterns, leadership tendencies, and collaborative instincts that determine how effectively the team works on a real project — making the pottery wheel as revealing as any structured assessment tool.

How

Following an ice-breaking demonstration by our professional potter-artist, employees are divided into teams and provided with high-quality modelling clay, sculpting tools, rolling boards, and technique reference cards. Teams work together to produce a clay sculpture based on a brief provided by our facilitator — which can be abstract (a visual metaphor for your team’s values), representational (a scale model of something meaningful to the team), or freely expressive. Our artist circulates throughout, offering technique guidance on hand-building methods including pinching, coiling, and slab construction. The session concludes with a group display and optional artist critique of each team’s work.

Stages

  • Stage 1: The Potter’s Welcome & Demo – Our professional potter demonstrates the core clay-working techniques with a live sculpting demonstration that sets the creative tone for the session.

  • Stage 2: The Brief & Material Exploration – Teams receive their sculpting brief and spend 10 minutes exploring the clay — feeling its weight, testing its malleability, and planning their approach before committing to a design.

  • Stage 3: The Collaborative Build – The main creative phase. Teams work together to build their clay sculpture, negotiating decisions about form, structure, and surface detail throughout. Our artist circulates with technique support.

  • Stage 4: The Gallery Display & Artist Critique – Completed sculptures are displayed together for group admiration and photography. Our artist offers a brief appreciative critique of each piece, highlighting what each team achieved technically and creatively.

Why This Works for Your Team

  • The Most Collaborative Creative Medium: Clay demands real-time negotiation between team members — every decision about shape and form must be made together, making the session as revealing as any structured team assessment.

  • Immediate Tactile Feedback: Clay responds instantly to touch, forgives and allows reworking, and rewards patience — creating a physical metaphor for adaptive teamwork that no digital activity can replicate.

  • Creative Confidence Builder: Working with clay produces results of genuine three-dimensional complexity that participants find surprising and deeply satisfying — a powerful boost to creative self-belief.

  • Screen-Free Mindfulness: The tactile absorption of working with clay is one of the most effective stress-relief and mindfulness experiences available in any corporate wellness programme.

  • Fully Managed Cleanup: Our team handles all clay disposal, table cleaning, and venue restoration after the session — zero mess or logistical responsibility for your team.

FAQs

None required. Our professional potter demonstrates all the techniques your team will use before the session begins, and the brief is designed to be achievable by complete beginners. The clay is forgiving — it can be reworked as many times as needed, so there is no pressure to get it right first time.
We use high-quality air-drying modelling clay that does not require a kiln — it is safe, non-toxic, and produces a durable finished sculpture once dry. The clay is smooth enough for fine detail work and forgiving enough for large-scale hand-building.
For collaborative team sculptures (where the whole team has built one piece), the sculpture is typically displayed as a team keepsake or given to a nominated team representative to take home. For individual sculpting formats, each participant takes their own piece home once it has air-dried (typically within 24 hours).
The collaborative team format works best for groups of 20 to 150 participants, divided into teams of 4 to 8. For larger groups, we run multiple simultaneous sculpting stations with additional artist facilitators.
A standard session runs 90 to 120 minutes, including the potter's welcome, brief, material exploration, collaborative build, and gallery display. We can extend to 150 minutes for groups who want more development time.
The sculpting brief is a creative prompt that guides what each team builds. Standard briefs include 'build a visual metaphor for your team's values' or 'create a model of your team's ideal future'. Custom briefs that align with your event theme, annual conference topic, or organisational challenge are available on request.
Clay is a hands-on medium and some mess is part of the experience. We provide protective table coverings, aprons, and wet wipes for participants. Our team manages all cleanup after the session — the venue is left spotless.
Yes. Play With Clay works excellently alongside Block Printing, String Art, and Dream Catcher Making as part of a multi-station creative day. Each activity offers a different medium and a different creative experience.
It is particularly effective for leadership teams. The collaborative clay brief surfaces leadership and communication dynamics with remarkable clarity — who takes creative control, who defers, who innovates, and who builds the consensus are all visible within the first 20 minutes.
We recommend a minimum of 5 to 7 working days for standard bookings. For custom sculpting briefs or large groups of 200+, we recommend 2 to 3 weeks advance notice.
