About Gauri Sawant
Gauri Sawant is a pioneering Indian transgender activist, mother, and motivational speaker whose life has been a story of courage, resilience, and social transformation. Born in Pune, she left home at the age of 14 to follow her authentic self, defying societal norms and inspiring generations. In 2001, she became the first transgender person in India to adopt a child, breaking deep-rooted orthodox traditions and establishing herself as a symbol of love and advocacy.
As the founder and director of Sakhi Char Chowghi, Gauri has been instrumental in providing support to transgender individuals and people affected by HIV/AIDS, delivering social programs and awareness campaigns across Maharashtra and India. Her advocacy extends to legal reforms, healthcare access, and education for marginalized communities. In 2014, she filed a landmark petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking adoption rights for transgender people, amplifying her voice in legal and social spheres.
