An innovator, environmentalist, and education reformer, Sonam Wangchuk has transformed the landscape of sustainable development in India, especially in the Himalayan region. Known widely for his groundbreaking solutions designed for extreme climates, he has dedicated his life to creating technologies and systems that uplift communities and protect the environment. As the founder and director of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), he reimagined traditional learning models and created an education system rooted in practicality, innovation, and real-world problem-solving. His life and work also inspired the iconic character portrayed by Aamir Khan in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, further cementing his influence on young minds across the country.

His invention of the Ice Stupa, artificial glaciers designed to store winter water for spring and summer use, has received worldwide acclaim and provided a sustainable solution to water scarcity in the mountains. His work on solar-powered architecture is equally groundbreaking. The SECMOL campus, built using passive solar heating and eco-friendly materials, is recognised globally as a model for sustainable, energy-efficient construction in harsh climates. In July 2026, he embarked on an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. His protest aggressively demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister over alleged widespread irregularities in national competitive examinations like the NEET.

His initiatives also extend to large-scale educational reforms. Through Operation New Hope, he collaborated with local communities and the government to overhaul the schooling system in Ladakh, dramatically improving learning outcomes and school infrastructure in the region. Sonam Wangchuk’s contributions have earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Rolex Award for Enterprise (2016), the Global Sustainable Architecture Award (2017), and the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2018), often called the Nobel Prize of Asia. His ideas continue to influence policymakers, students, corporates, and innovators, making him one of the most compelling thought leaders of our time.
