Arunachalam Muruganantham is a social entrepreneur from Tamil Nadu. He is the inventor of the low-cost sanitary pad-making machine and is credited for innovating grassroots mechanisms for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India. He was in the movie Period. End of Sentence which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) in 2018. Padman is a movie based on the invention of Arunachalam Muruganantham where he is portrayed by Akshay Kumar. In 2014, Arunachalam was included in Time Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People in the World and he has also been awarded India’s prestigious award Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2016.
