About PT Usha
Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha, fondly known as the “Queen of Indian Track and Field,” is one of India’s most enduring symbols of discipline, resilience, and national pride. Born in Kerala, PT Usha didn’t just compete for medals, she reshaped India’s belief in what its athletes could achieve on the global stage.
Her experience as an elite athlete is unparalleled. From narrowly missing an Olympic medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, while setting a Commonwealth record, to dominating the Asian circuit with multiple gold medals at the Asian Games, Asian Championships, and ATF Meets, Usha defined consistency at the highest level. Her six-medal haul at the 1985 Jakarta Asian Championships and four golds at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games remain benchmarks in Indian athletics.
What is less spoken about is how PT Usha institutionalised excellence after retirement. Her expertise evolved from personal performance to nation-building, through athlete mentoring, grassroots development, and sports administration. As President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) since 2022, she has worked through 2024–2025 to push governance reforms, athlete welfare frameworks, and long-term Olympic preparedness, often navigating entrenched systems with quiet firmness rather than rhetoric.
Her authority extends beyond sport. A nominated Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and the first nominated MP to serve as Vice Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, she brings the athlete’s lens into policymaking, especially around youth, women, and sports infrastructure. Her trustworthiness lies in decades of integrity: she speaks only of what she has lived. As a speaker, PT Usha doesn’t glorify success alone, she speaks about discipline without applause, leadership without entitlement, and resilience beyond medals.
