About Nazneen Banu
Nazneen Banu is a pioneering civil servant, technocrat, and thought leader whose career represents an extraordinary blend of defence, engineering, leadership, and cultural diplomacy. She holds the distinction of being the first woman officer from Bihar to join the prestigious Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE) under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, and only the second woman officer in the service’s history.
An accomplished academic, Nazneen earned her Master’s degree in High Voltage Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, in 2002, one of India’s most elite scientific institutions. Her technical expertise laid the foundation for a distinguished career within the Military Engineer Services (MES), where she served across strategic locations including Delhi, Visakhapatnam, Pune, and Bengaluru.
During her tenure with the armed forces, Nazneen handled large-scale infrastructure development projects spanning water systems, power supply, roads, and hospitals, critical to both military preparedness and civilian welfare. Alongside execution, she served as a technical advisor to Station Commanders, contributing directly to operational efficiency and strategic planning.
In her current role as Director of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Bengaluru, Nazneen has emerged as a key voice in India’s cultural leadership ecosystem. Through this position, she actively strengthens India’s soft power, championing art, heritage, and cultural diplomacy at national and international levels.
