What

Innovation Build Off is engage4more’s most technically ambitious team-building experience — an experiential design-thinking workshop where leadership and functional teams compete in a high-stakes tech build-off, constructing functional prototypes of robots, clean-fuel vehicles, amphibious craft, or other technology solutions from curated raw material kits within a fixed time and budget. The workshop is specifically designed as a premium team engagement for organisations where innovation culture is not just a value statement but a business imperative: it puts every participant through the complete innovation cycle — problem framing, concept generation, rapid prototyping, iterative testing, and competitive demonstration — in a single immersive session that is as intellectually demanding as it is physically hands-on.

Our delivery is grounded in engage4more’s MORE² Framework, which diagnoses the precise engagement gaps your team needs to address. Where strategic alignment is the objective, we layer in our SPARK Framework to connect the activity to your organisational priorities. To maximise the day’s impact, we recommend anchoring the session with one of our expert Motivational Speakers whose keynote primes the team for the experience ahead.

What makes Innovation Build Off uniquely powerful is that the build challenge produces an objectively testable result: the robot either navigates the course, the vehicle either reaches the finish line, the amphibious craft either floats under load. This objective performance metric creates the most honest possible evaluation of the team's innovation process — not whether they had interesting ideas, but whether they executed those ideas into something that demonstrably works under competitive pressure.

How

Our Innovation Engineers distribute identical raw material kits and a detailed design brief to competing teams. The brief specifies the performance criteria the finished prototype must meet, the budget allocation each team can spend on additional materials, and the time window available for design, build, and testing. Teams work simultaneously through ideation, prototyping, internal testing, and refinement before the competitive demonstration phase begins. Our facilitators observe the innovation process throughout — coaching the design-thinking methodology without providing content answers — and collect specific observations about each team's innovation culture for the post-demonstration debrief.

Stages

  • Stage 1: The Innovation Brief – Teams receive their design brief, raw material kit, and budget allocation. A structured 10-minute ideation session generates multiple concept approaches before the team commits to their build direction.

  • Stage 2: The Build Phase – Teams design, build, test, and iterate within the fixed time window. Internal testing opportunities are limited to preserve the competitive demonstration's integrity.

  • Stage 3: The Competitive Demonstration – All prototypes are demonstrated simultaneously under standardised conditions. Performance is scored on the objective criteria specified in the brief.

  • Stage 4: The Innovation Debrief – Facilitator leads a structured debrief connecting the team's observable innovation process behaviours — ideation depth, prototyping speed, testing rigour, iteration willingness — to their organisation's real innovation culture.

FAQs

Our standard build categories include: functional mini-robots (line-following or obstacle-avoiding), clean-fuel vehicles (rubber-band powered or gravity-powered), amphibious craft (must float and carry specified weight), and structural engineering models (bridge, crane, or tower). The specific category is selected based on your team's profile and the event's innovation theme.
No. Each build kit includes a reference design and beginner-accessible components. Our Innovation Engineers provide technique guidance throughout the build phase. The most successful teams are typically those with the strongest collaborative process, not the most technical individuals.
Teams of 4 to 6 work best, giving every member a meaningful role across the ideation, build, testing, and demonstration phases. For groups of 40 to 150, we run multiple simultaneous teams with a grand comparative demonstration.
A standard session runs 2 to 2.5 hours. A premium half-day format (4 hours) with two build rounds and a deeper innovation process debrief is available for dedicated innovation culture development programmes.
Yes. Build briefs can be framed around your specific industry challenges — a clean energy company might build a solar-powered vehicle, a logistics company might build an autonomous sorting mechanism. Custom brief development requires 2 to 3 weeks advance planning.
Each team needs a table of approximately 1.5 x 0.75 metres for their build station. A standard hotel conference room or training hall works perfectly. The demonstration area requires approximately 5 x 3 metres of clear floor space per prototype test.
We recommend a minimum of 7 working days for standard build categories. For custom build briefs or specialist component kits, we recommend 2 to 3 weeks.
