Lollapalooza is one of the most popular, music festivals in the world. What started as a touring event in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, has now become a unique music experience.
History of the festival
In 1991, the lead singer of Jane’s Addiction, Perry Farrel, started Lollapalooza as a touring program for the farewell tour of his band and Lollapalooza traveled across the United States and Canada in 1991. What was supposed to be a one-off event became a hit and its success lead its organizers to revive Lollapalooza for the next years which continues until 1997.
The festival went into a loss and the shows between 1998 and 2003 were canceled. The festival finally kicked off and gained popularity in 2005.
The music genre of the festival is not limited to rock, but everything from heavy metal, punk rock, electronic dance music, and hip hop. Lollapalooza’s lineup has included Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, Metallica, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, and many more global artists.
The music festival is now making its debut in India from 28th to 31st January in Mumbai and the lineup will include popular artists from India and all around the world.

1. Lollapalooza is a family friendly music festival

2. Lollapalooza didn’t have an easy start

The attempt to revive it in 2003 was done but it was only in 2005, Lollapalooza became profitable and gained back its reputation.
3. The Name of the Festival was inspired from a film
The name of the music festival Lollapalooza was inspired by a term which Perry Farrell heard in the short film “Three Stooges”. The character in the original festival’s logo also holds a lollipop to pay homage to the double-meaning term in the movie which means a large lollipop.
4. J-Hope of BTS created history at the festival
BTS’ J-Hope becoming the first South Korean artist to headline the main stage at a major US festival, with his Lollapalooza 2022 performance which was a huge hit as a massive number of fans gathered to watch him perform in Chicago.
5. Legendary artists have performed at Lollapalooza
Over the years, some of the most legendary stars of the world have headlined Lollapalooza. Singers like Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga and Kanye West have given memorable performances and bands like Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk have also blessed the stage with their thrilling performances.
6. The Festival travels all around the world
Ever since its inception, unlike other festivals which were one time events held at single venues, Lollapalooza toured across the US and Canada with diverse artists performing at the festival. After its massive success and popularity, the festival expanded internationally with venues in Chile, Brazil, Argentine, Germany, Sweden, France and Israel.
The Festival in 2022, announced its debut in India for its January 2023 edition. It will also be Lollapalooza’s first event in Asia.
7. Nirvana could never perform at Lollapalooza due to a tragedy
Nirvana was an iconic band which never got to perform at Lollapalooza as the week before they were due to headline the music festival, Kurt Cobain, who was the lead vocalist of the band tragically died in 1994. Her wife Courtney Love came on the stage to discuss her husband’s death.
