What

VR Plankwalk is engage4more’s most viscerally thrilling team-building experience — a virtual reality challenge where participants strap on an Oculus headset, step onto a narrow physical plank elevated just a few centimetres off the ground, and find themselves standing on a ledge 80 stories above a bustling virtual city. The brain knows it is a simulation. The body does not. The physiological response — the racing heart, the instinctive grip, the sharp intake of breath — is completely real. And the decision to take that step forward anyway is one of the most viscerally courageous things a person can do in a corporate setting.

Our delivery is grounded in engage4more’s MORE² Framework, which diagnoses the precise engagement gaps your team needs to address. Where strategic alignment is the objective, we layer in our SPARK Framework to connect the activity to your organisational priorities. To maximise the day’s impact, we recommend anchoring the session with one of our expert Motivational Speakers whose keynote primes the team for the experience ahead.

VR Plankwalk is not simply a fun VR experience — it is a live metaphor for the courage required to take calculated risks in professional life. The team watching a colleague take their first step — cheering them on, supporting their nerves, celebrating their completion — experiences a genuine moment of collective encouragement that translates directly into a more supportive team culture. The debrief connects the individual act of stepping off the ledge to the organisational act of taking on a new challenge, speaking up in a meeting, or volunteering for an uncomfortable assignment.

How

Our facilitators set up the VR Plankwalk station — a physical plank of 30 cm wide and 2 metres long, elevated 8 cm off the ground, connected to an Oculus headset running our proprietary heights simulation. Participants queue for their turn, are briefed on the experience and safety protocols, and then step into the virtual world. The headset immerses them completely in a high-rise cityscape where they must walk the plank to reach a target at the far end. Our facilitators manage each participant’s experience, offering encouragement and support throughout. Group energy builds naturally as each person completes their walk and celebrates with their team.

To book VR Plankwalk for your event,

Stages

  • Stage 1: The VR Briefing – Facilitators explain the VR environment, the physical plank setup, and the safety protocol. Participants are shown a short preview of the virtual cityscape to prepare them psychologically.

  • Stage 2: The Calibration Experience – First participants step into the VR environment at ground level to calibrate their headset comfort and spatial orientation before the height element is introduced.

  • Stage 3: The Plankwalk Challenge – The full height simulation activates. Each participant walks the plank while teammates watch and encourage. Completion is celebrated collectively. The experience typically takes 3 to 5 minutes per person.

  • Stage 4: The Courage Debrief – Once all participants have completed their walk (or consciously chosen not to — both are equally valid), a facilitated debrief connects the VR courage experience to real-world professional risk-taking behaviours.

FAQs

Yes, completely. The physical plank is only 8 cm off the ground. Any participant who loses their balance simply steps off the plank onto the flat floor. The safety risk is effectively zero. The challenge is entirely psychological, not physical.
That is perfectly fine and is never forced. Our facilitators create a no-pressure environment where choosing not to walk is treated with equal respect as completing the walk. In the debrief, we explore what the experience of watching others overcome their hesitation feels like — which is often as insightful as the walk itself.
The VR Plankwalk is a stationary experience — participants stand and walk slowly on a fixed plank without rapid virtual movement. This makes it significantly less likely to trigger motion sickness compared to VR racing or flight simulations. However, participants who are highly sensitive to any VR experience should flag this before participating.
VR Plankwalk works as a drop-in experience for groups of any size. Each participant takes 3 to 5 minutes. For structured event formats, we calculate the number of stations required based on your group size and event window to ensure everyone participates.
For a group of 20 to 30 participants with a single station, the experience runs 60 to 90 minutes including the briefing, individual walks, and debrief. For larger groups, we deploy multiple stations simultaneously to reduce wait times.
Yes, and this is a popular format. VR Plankwalk works excellently as one of several experience stations in a VR activity day alongside Virtual Cricket or other VR experiences, or as the centrepiece of a leadership courage theme event.
Each VR station requires approximately 3 x 3 metres of clear, flat floor space. A standard meeting room, hotel suite, or designated corner of a ballroom works perfectly.
The debrief connects the individual courage experience to professional risk-taking: how does the feeling of stepping off the virtual ledge compare to speaking up in a meeting, volunteering for a challenging project, or making a difficult decision? The conversation is typically one of the most honest and energised debriefs in our portfolio.
Yes. Our facilitators sanitise all headset contact points — including the foam padding — between every participant using hospital-grade disinfectant wipes. This is standard protocol for all our VR experiences.
We recommend a minimum of 5 to 7 working days for standard bookings. For multi-station large-group events, we recommend 2 weeks advance notice to ensure equipment availability across all required cities.
