What
Giant Chess Game is engage4more’s most intellectually prestigious team engagement experience — a life-size chess installation where full-height chess pieces are moved across a giant board by a team that must plan, debate, and agree on every single move before it is made. Giant Chess transforms one of history's most celebrated individual strategy games into a powerful team decision-making exercise: when five people must agree on each move, the game becomes as much about communication, persuasion, and leadership dynamics as it is about chess strategy. The result is simultaneously a competitive intellectual challenge, a hilarious team debate, and a genuinely beautiful event installation.
Our delivery is grounded in engage4more’s MORE² Framework, which diagnoses the precise engagement gaps your team needs to address. Where strategic alignment is the objective, we layer in our SPARK Framework to connect the activity to your organisational priorities. To maximise the day’s impact, we recommend anchoring the session with one of our expert Motivational Speakers whose keynote primes the team for the experience ahead.
Giant Chess works because chess itself is a universal cultural touchstone — almost every participant has a childhood relationship with the game, and the sight of human-scale pieces on a giant board triggers immediate excitement and competitive instinct. Even participants who have not played chess in years discover that the collective decision-making format removes the intimidation of individual performance while amplifying the joy of strategic thinking. The game becomes a vehicle for the most natural, most animated, and most revealing team conversation of the event day.

How
Our facilitator sets up the giant chess board with full-height pieces at your venue and divides participants into two competing teams. Each team nominates a "Chess Commander" who executes moves, but all strategic decisions are made collectively through team debate within a 2-minute move clock. Our facilitator manages timing, coaches chess basics for participants unfamiliar with the game, and runs live commentary that builds spectator engagement throughout. For larger groups, we run simultaneous boards in a round-robin tournament format. The session concludes with a champion celebration and optional chess strategy debrief connecting game decisions to real workplace strategic thinking.
