What

Best Out of Waste is engage4more’s most intellectually stimulating eco-conscious workshop — a 120-minute creative challenge where teams are given a specific problem to solve and a collection of waste materials — cardboard tubes, bottle caps, fabric scraps, rubber bands, newspaper, plastic containers — as their only resource. No additional tools, no shopping lists, no digital aids. Just the problem, the waste, and the team’s collective ingenuity. The result is consistently astonishing: functional, creative, and often genuinely beautiful solutions that demonstrate the extraordinary resourcefulness of teams freed from the assumption that they need better tools to do great work.

Our delivery is grounded in engage4more’s MORE² Framework, which diagnoses the precise engagement gaps your team needs to address. Where strategic alignment is the objective, we layer in our SPARK Framework to connect the activity to your organisational priorities. To maximise the day’s impact, we recommend anchoring the session with one of our expert Motivational Speakers whose keynote primes the team for the experience ahead.

Best Out of Waste achieves something that very few corporate activities can: it simultaneously builds creative problem-solving skills, strengthens environmental consciousness, and reveals the team’s authentic innovation culture. The constraint of working only with waste materials is not a limitation — it is the point. Constraint is the engine of creativity, and teams that learn to work brilliantly under constraint in a 120-minute workshop carry that resourcefulness into their real work. The presentation element — where each team pitches their solution to the full group — also builds the communication and storytelling skills that are among the most transferable of all business capabilities.

How

Our facilitator opens with a brief talk introducing the creative constraint principle and the environmental context — why working with waste is not just a fun limitation but a genuinely important design challenge for the 21st century. Participants are then divided into teams, each receiving an identical kit of waste materials and a problem brief. The 90-minute build phase follows, during which teams design, prototype, and refine their solution. Our facilitators circulate throughout — not offering solutions, but asking the questions that unlock lateral thinking: “What if you used that differently?” “What does this shape remind you of?” The session concludes with each team presenting their creation in a structured two-minute pitch to the full group.

Stages

  • Stage 1: The Creative Constraint Brief – Facilitator introduces the problem, the materials kit, and the design-under-constraint principle. Teams examine their waste materials before committing to a direction.

  • Stage 2: The Ideation Sprint – A structured 15-minute brainstorm where teams generate multiple possible solutions before selecting one to build — practising the diverge-then-converge creative process.

  • Stage 3: The Build Phase – 75 minutes of hands-on construction, prototyping, and refinement. Teams may use only their waste material kit. Facilitators circulate with Socratic questioning to unlock lateral thinking.

  • Stage 4: The Innovation Pitch – Each team presents their solution in a 2-minute structured pitch: what problem they solved, how they used the waste materials, and what they would add if they had one more resource. A panel of judges (or audience vote) selects the winning solution.

Why This Works for Your Team

  • Constraint as Creative Engine: Working only with waste materials removes the excuse of inadequate tools — teams discover that resourcefulness, not resources, is the real source of innovation.

  • Environmental Consciousness Made Active: The activity moves sustainability from a company value statement to a personal design experience — participants engage with the materials and the environmental challenge simultaneously.

  • The Pitch Builds Business Communication Skills: The two-minute structured pitch at the end of the session builds the presentation, storytelling, and persuasion skills that are directly transferable to the boardroom.

  • Reveals the Team’s Real Innovation Culture: How does the team handle a problem with no obvious solution and inadequate tools? The answers are visible within the first 20 minutes and consistently match the team’s real-world innovation dynamics.

  • Ideal for Innovation, CSR & Sustainability Themes: Best Out of Waste is the most naturally aligned activity for companies with active sustainability commitments, innovation cultures, or Earth Day events.

FAQs

Our standard waste kit includes cardboard tubes, cardboard sheets, newspaper, bottle caps, fabric scraps, rubber bands, string, plastic containers, corks, and wooden sticks. Every team receives an identical kit to ensure a fair challenge. The specific contents may vary slightly based on availability.
Problems are selected to be universal, creative, and open-ended — for example: 'design a solution that helps a child learn to read more easily', 'build a tool that helps an elderly person live more independently', or 'create a device that helps reduce food waste'. Problems can be customised to align with your industry or company's social responsibility focus.
We offer both formats. The competitive format — with a panel of judges scoring each team's pitch on creativity, functionality, and use of materials — creates higher energy and engagement. The collaborative format — where teams share learnings rather than compete — creates a deeper learning conversation. We recommend the competitive format for larger groups and the collaborative format for leadership team workshops.
The activity works best for groups of 20 to 200 participants, divided into teams of 4 to 6. For larger groups, we run multiple simultaneous problem briefs and bring the solutions together in a joint showcase event.
A standard session runs 120 minutes, including the creative constraint brief, ideation sprint, build phase, and innovation pitch. This is one of our longer workshop formats — the full duration is necessary to allow teams to iterate through multiple design approaches.
Yes. We regularly design custom problem briefs that align with your company's industry, social responsibility focus, or strategic theme. Custom brief design requires a 15-minute consultation with your HR or L&D lead before the session.
No — the constraint of using only the provided waste materials is the core design challenge of the activity. Participants may use their hands, basic folding, cutting (scissors are provided), and taping (tape is provided) but may not introduce any materials from outside the kit.
Teams need a table of approximately 1.5 x 0.75 metres per team for the build phase. A standard hotel conference room or training room works perfectly. We bring all materials, problem briefs, and display tables for the pitch presentation.
Absolutely. Best Out of Waste works powerfully as a practical hands-on component within a larger sustainability day, paired with a sustainability keynote speaker and other eco-conscious activities for a comprehensive corporate responsibility event.
We recommend a minimum of 5 to 7 working days for standard bookings. For custom problem brief development or large groups of 200+, we recommend 2 to 3 weeks advance notice.
