Lieutenant General Arun Ananthanarayan is a distinguished retired officer of the Indian Army, known for his outstanding service, leadership, and vision. With a career spanning over 42 years, he has held several critical positions across operational, strategic, and training roles in India and abroad. Seriously wounded in Operations in Kashmir, he has served as the Chief of Staff of the South Western Command, Jaipur, and the Director General of Strategic Panning of the Indian Army, in addition to having been the General Officer Commanding of Dakshin Bharat Area. He also led as the officiating Commandant of the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, where he mentored countless future leaders of the armed forces.

Today, his journey stands as a proof of courage, discipline, and purpose. Chose Uniform Over IIT Dreams

Born on 17th December 1964 in Dindigul, Madurai (Tamil Nadu). Arun Ananthanarayan was a brilliant student with a deep passion for engineering. His academic excellence earned him an incredible All India Rank of 13 in the Joint Entrance Examination. Securing him a place at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. But while many would have followed the conventional path of success, Arun chose a road less taken. Driven by a higher calling and a sense of duty. He walked away from IIT and opted to serve the nation by joining the National Defence Academy as part of its 67th course.

His commitment to the country didn’t stop there. He went on to train at the Indian Military Academy. Where he was part of the 77th course, marking the beginning of an extraordinary military journey. For Arun, patriotism wasn’t just a feeling, it was a decision, a direction, and ultimately, his destiny.

Bravery at the Battlefield

Lt. Gen. Arun Ananthanarayan’s illustrious journey in the Indian Army began in December 1985. When he was commissioned into the 8th Battalion, The Grenadiers. A soldier-scholar, he attended the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and later raised the 55th Battalion, Rashtriya Rifles, which was deployed in counter-insurgency operations in Pulwama, As the Commaning Officer he led from the front and was seriously injured in a majot counter terrorist Operation. He commanded the 7 Sector Rashtriya Rifles in Handwara as a Brigadier and went on to attend the prestigious National Defence College, New Delhi. Serving Peace, Representing India

His international assignments include serving in Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and the UN HQ, where he worked on structuring large multinational coalitions. He also attended the UN Senior Mission Leaders Course in Geneva. Arun’s leadership continued as he rose to Major General, commanding a strike mountain division in the Northeast, and later became Deputy Commandant of the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, and later as Director General of Strategic Planning at Army HQ,  where he shaped future doctrines.

He concluded his career as the Chief of Staff, South Western Command. Awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2024, he retired after 39 years of outstanding service. Leaving behind a legacy of courage, intellect, and nation-first leadership.

Shot, Survived, Stood Strong

While on an operational mission in Jammu and Kashmir, he was seriously wounded in action. Shot during a high-stakes engagement in the line of duty. For most, such an incident would mark the end of active service. But for Arun, it became a defining moment. One that tested not just his physical strength, but the depth of his resolve. Refusing to let pain dictate his path, he recovered and returned with an even stronger commitment to serve. His journey from injury to leadership is not just a story of survival, but of unshakable grit.

Honours Etched in Duty

Arun Ananthanarayan has held some of the highest-ranking positions in the Indian Army. Including Chief of Staff of the South Western Command, Jaipur, and General Officer Commanding of the Dakshin Bharat Area. A decorated war veteran, he was seriously wounded in operations and has been honored with numerous gallantry and distinguished awards, among them the Sena Medal for Gallantry (2005), the Yudh Seva Medal (2014), the Vishisht Seva Medal (2015), and the prestigious Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2024).

He has also received the Chief of the Army Staff’s Commendation on four occasions. As a celebrated strategist and speaker. He has delivered over 1,300 impactful sessions for schools, universities, and global corporations, making him one of the most respected voices in leadership and transformation today.
